March 25, 2019 | Women's Beach Volleyball, Features
The USC beach volleyball program has won three national championships and seeks a fourth under eighth-year head coach Anna Collier
Meet Karina Myszkowski, a freshman for the USC beach volleyball team. This spring, the Women of Troy added five newcomers to a squad of seasoned veterans who have their sights set on the school's fourth national championship on the sand. Get to know each of the newcomers a little better.
So, how do you like USC so far?
I absolutely love USC. I definitely made the right choice to come here. I have had so much fun just at the school and being a part of the team. It's been the best experience so far.
Why did you decide to come to USC?
I came to USC because it's really close to home, which is nice, because I'm really close with my family and my two dogs. Also, it's just such an amazing school, along with an amazing beach volleyball team.
Outside of volleyball, what do you like to do? Any favorite places to go in LA?
I really like spending time at the beach with my friends and my family, I like to try out new restaurants around downtown LA. My friends and I also like taking weekend trips to San Diego and Santa Barbara.
Do you have a favorite beach?
I really like Manhattan Beach, obviously, because I live there. It's a very nice beach, but it's never too crowded.
What class or classes have you enjoyed taking here?
My favorite class was a communication and technology class I took last semester. It was really cool because we got to write a paper on the show Black Mirror and also take a break from social media for a week and write about our experiences. That was really cool to take.
Do you have a specific career that you're hoping to go into after studying communication here?
I'm not exactly sure what I want to do yet, but I'm really interested in PR and marketing, so possibly something along those lines.
Do you plan on continuing to play volleyball after graduation?
Yeah, I think that would be fun! I'm not really sure, but my little sister plays beach volleyball, too, and my mom has this dream of us playing together.
Do you have any rituals for before competitions?
Well, before competitions I always get a venti vanilla latte from Starbucks, my favorite drink, and… that's about it. Then just listen to some music and get pumped up.
What's your favorite memory from playing in high school?
My favorite memory from high school was when we won state championships two years in a row. Our beach volleyball team didn't have a lot of competition in the area, so we never lost a game for my entire high school career. It was really cool, really fun, we all had a ton of energy and were really close.
What are you looking forward to for the rest of the season?
I am super excited to get to travel with the team, get really close and hang out with them all the time, just because I love everyone on the team.
