February 26, 2019 | Women's Tennis, Features
The USC women's tennis team defended their home court and defeated San Diego State 5-2 on Tuesday, Feb. 26. With the victory, the Women of Troy improve their record to 5-2.
Â
The Trojans came out swinging to kick off doubles and the USC pair of Kulikov/Valdes decisively beat San Diego State's Melosch/Nadozie 6-1 on court one. The victory extends the duo's winning streak to four matches in a row.
Â
On court three, Trojan tandem Weissmann/Willson defeated the Aztec pair of Aubets/Rimoldi Godoy 6-3 to nab the doubles point. This is the second time this season that the Women of Troy have won the doubles point.
Â
After gaining strong momentum from winning the doubles point, USC continued to play with fervor. Junior Angela Kulikov sprinted to a fast finish by defeating San Diego State's Jenny Moinard with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 score on court one.
Â
Sophomore Ana Neffa continued to bring the intensity to Marks Stadium as she swiftly beat Aztec Mis Smith 6-0, 6-3 on court three to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead.
Â
After claiming a close 7-5 first set, senior Rianna Valdes powered through the second set to win 6-3 and clinch the match for the Women of Troy on court two. This is Valdes' first clinch of the 2019 season.
Â
Although USC had clinched the match, the remaining courts were played out. On court four, San Diego State's Nnena Nadozie defeated USC junior No. 120Â Becca Weissmann 6-4, 6-2. The Aztecs came back to claim another win as Abbie Mulbarger beat Trojan junior Sydney Van Alphen 7-5, 6-4.
Â
All the attention then turned to court five. After blasting through a quick first set to win 6-2, freshman Danielle Willson then lost a close second set to Aztec opponent Alicia Melosch 7-6 (4). A ten-point tiebreaker was played and points were exchanged back and forth, but Willson came out on top winning 10-8. With this win, she extends her winning streak to seven matches and remains undefeated in dual matches (6-0).
Â
Next up for the Women of Troy is a trip across town to Westwood, Calif. to take on rival UCLA. USC will face the Bruins in a non-conference match on Friday (March 1) at 1:30 p.m. PT. The match will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network.
