Kedon Slovis Named Semifinalist For FWAA National Freshman Of The Year
December 23, 2019 | Football, Features
USC true freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis has been named a semifinalist for the Football Writers Association of American National Freshman of the Year.
Â
Three finalists will be named after Jan. 1, with the Player of the Year announced on Jan. 13.
Â
Slovis is joined as a semifinalist by North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell, Miami defensive lineman Gregory Rousseau, LSU defensive back Derek Stingley Jr., Memphis running back Kenneth Gainwell, Georgia linebacker Azeez Ojulari and Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Â
Slovis, who began the 2019 season as the backup but entered the starting lineup when starter JT Daniels suffered a season-ending knee injury in the opener, was the 2019 Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and made All-Pac-12 honorable mention and Pro Football Focus Freshman All-American third team.
Â
He ranks fifth nationally in completion percentage (.718), eighth in passing yards (294.7), ninth in completions (23.6), 10th in passing efficiency (167.6), 16th in passing TDs (28) and 18th in total offense (290.4).  His 260 completions and 3,242 passing yards are USC freshman season records, while his 28 TD passes trail only Sam Darnold's frosh mark (31). His 71.8% completion percentage is above Cody Kessler's USC season record of 69.7%. He has 4 games this year with 400 passing yards (a USC season record and tied with Matt Barkley for the most ever in a Trojan career) and 4 TD throws, all in the past 5 contests, including a school-record 515 yards with 4 scores against UCLA.
