Michael Pittman Jr. Named Finalist For Witten Award
December 19, 2019 | Football, Features
USC senior wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. has been named a finalist for the 2019 Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award, which recognizes a college football player with an outstanding record of leadership.
Pittman is one of three finalists, along with Air Force quarterback Isaiah Sanders and Tennessee offensive lineman Trey Smith.
The winner will be announced at a ceremony on Feb. 18, 2020, at The Star in Frisco, Tex.
Pittman, who has 95 receptions for 1,222 yards and 11 TDs this season, won the 2019 Pop Warner College Football Award, was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award and is a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award. He made the 2019 All-Pac-12 first team and was an All-American second teamer. He is fourth nationally in receptions (7.9), 10th in receiving yards (101.8) and 12th in receiving TDs.
In his career, he has 165 receptions for 2,446 yards and 19 touchdowns. He is a sociology major and is scheduled to graduate this May.
A USC team captain, Pittman is very active in community service, volunteering countless hours to a wide variety of organizations. He has overcome his struggles with stuttering and uses that challenge as a platform to promote reading skills to elementary students.
Pittman has volunteered with Project Hope, a program that provides young people in and around LA with a safe and supportive learning environment where they can achieve their highest potential; he sponsors a child in Indonesia through Compassion International, a humanitarian aid child sponsorship organization; and he speaks at local elementary schools about the importance of getting a college education. Additionally, he and other members of the USC football team helped remodel an apartment at the Jenesse Center, a local domestic violence prevention and intervention center, and volunteered at USC's "A Day in Troy" event where local fans have the opportunity to spend an afternoon with USC student-athletes.
The winner of the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award also will receive a $10,000 contribution in his name to his school's athletic scholarship fund. The contribution will be made by Witten's SCORE Foundation, the official charity of Jason and his wife Michelle. The SCORE Foundation, founded in 2007, has positively impacted tens of thousands of children and families in Texas and Tennessee over the last 12 years.
