October 04, 2019 | Track & Field, Features
USC graduate Dalilah Muhammad set a world record in winning the 400m hurdles gold medal at the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar today (Oct. 4).
Muhammad (USC, 2012) ran a world-record time of 52.16 to edge out fellow American Sydney McLaughlin (52.23) to win the gold medal in the women's 400m hurdles. Muhammad, the reigning Olympic champion in the event, broke her own record in the 400m hurdles of 52.20 set in winning the title at the 2019 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Muhammad won her first World Championships gold medal in the 400m hurdles, after earning silver medals at the 2013 and 2017 World Championships.
"This means so much," said Muhammad. "It's difficult to describe. I just wanted the world title so much but to break the world record again is fantastic. I just decided to go for it from the start and I felt Sydney (McLaughlin) coming at me around hurdle nine, then I just gave it everything I'd got. It hasn't really sunk in yet but it feels good. I did not expect to break the world record today, I was definitely just trying to win that race. Two world records, that sounds quite crazy, now that it is done."
Aaron Brown (USC, 2013) and Andre De Grasse (USC, 2016) ran on Canada's 4x100m relay team which posted a season-best time of 37.91 to finish sixth in its qualifying heat, .005 behind the Netherlands. Canada had the eighth-fastest time overall, but did not advance despite having a faster time than one of the of the automatic qualifiers in the first heat (USA).
