Getting To Know Brian Herron

Brian Herron is a freshman sprinter for the Trojans. He's from Decatur, Ga. where he attended Lakeside High School. Herron ran on the U20 4x400m relay at the 2017 Pan American U20 championships in Peru. That relay team set a new world record. Herron is majoring in computer engineering.
Q: Why did you choose to run track at USC?
BH: It liked it because of what Coach Caryl (Smith Gilbert) and Coach Quincy (Watts) had to offer and also because I was looking for schools with my engineering major. I've been interested in USC since I was in 10th grade.
Q: What's it been like to be around all the talented athletes at USC?
BH: It makes me want to work harder in practice because back at home, besides my teammate Nick, there wasn't a lot of competition in practice. Coming into this environment and having people around that want the same thing as you is really motivating.
Q: What's the most interesting place you've competed at?
BH: I'd have to say Cuba, the track was run down. The experience of racing in a different country was cool, we had to race the Cuban Olympic team and that was a tough challenge. We were there for about a week and racing for three days.
Q: Which race is your favorite to run?
BH: The 400.
Q: How did you get into computer engineering?
BH: A lot of my friends from my high school did it so I got into it through them. I started by just taking out computer parts at first and then I started building whole computers.
Q: Do you have anything that you've built saved on a shelf at home?
BH: Not really, because I just do it so often now.
Q: How long have you played the saxophone?
BH: I've been playing that since I was in fifth grade. My dad played the saxophone because he's in a band. My mom plays piano and violin, so we are all musical. I also play the guitar and piano.
Q: What's your favorite part about being an athlete at USC?
BH: The access to treatment, I didn't get it back at home as frequently. I get treatment here every day.
Q: What's on your Instagram discover page and is it an accurate representation of your interests today?
BH: Track and anime, yeah, it's pretty accurate even though I don't really use social media.
Q: What is your favorite music genre?
BH: Jazz.
Q: What do you listen to before races?
BH: Rock.
