Trojans Win 6 Events During First Day Of MLK Jr. Collegiate Invitational

USC's Earnest Sears III won the men's high jump, Isaiah Jewett the men's 600m race, Jemima Russell the women's 600m race, Nathan Bultman the men's weight throw, TeeTee Terry the women's 200m and Margaux Jones the women's long jump during the first day of action at the Martin Luther King Collegiate Invitational at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. today (Jan. 18).
- Sears won the men's high with a personal-best clearance of 7-5.25 (2.27m). He entered at 6-7.50 (2.02m) and cleared that and 6-9.50 (2.07m), 6-11.50 (2.12m) and 7-1.50 (2.17m) in his first attempt. He missed in his first attempt at 7-2.50 (2.20m), but by the time he cleared it in his second attempt he had eliminated the competition. He then cleared 7-4.25 (2.24m) and 7-5.25 (2.27m) on his first attempt before missing twice at 7-6.50 (2.30m) which would have been a school record. Sears moved to third on USC's all-time list, trailing only Jesse Williams and Randall Cunningham who have cleared 7-6.00 (2.29m). Freshman Nathan Patterson placed third with a clearance of 6-11.50 and freshman Ayden Owens finished ninth with a clearance of 6-1.50 (1.87m).
- In his first race as a Trojan junior Isaiah Jewett won the men's 600m race with a time of 1:15.95. USC doesn't run too many 600m races, but at the same meet last season, USC 800m All-American Robert Ford placed second with a time of 1:18.51. Junior Matthew Myrtue placed fourth with a time of 1:19.49, freshman Sam VanDorpe was seventh with a time of 1:20.76 and freshman Devin Bright was 10th with a time of 1:20.91.
- Freshman Jemima Russell won the women's 600m race with a time of 1:29.25, while fellow freshman Alyssa Brewer placed third with a time of 1:32.07.
- Senior Marguax Jones won the women's long jump with a best leap of 19-11.00 (6.07m). Senior Lyndsey Lopes had a best jump of 17-5.50 (5.32m) to place 16th in the event.
- Redshirt junior Nathan Bultman won the men's weight throw with a PR of 67-8.00 (20.62m). The second-place thrower threw 67-7.50 (20.61m) in his final attempt. Bultman bettered his second-place standing on USC's all-time list.
- Sophomore TeeTee Terry won the women's 200m dash with a time of 23.31. Redshirt junior Angie Annelus was second in the 200m with a time of 23.55, junior Anna Cockrell was fourth with a time of 23.79, freshman Bailey Lear was fifth with a time of 24.00 and redshirt senior Dior Hall was seventh with a PR of 24.15. There were 68 runners in the event and USC's five athletes all placed in the top seven in the event. Terry, Cockrell and Lear won their heats.
- Sophomore Joy McArthur placed fourth in the women's weight throw with a mark of 56-8.50 (17.28m). Her throw moved her to third on USC's all-time list in the event.
- Freshman Eric Allen Jr. was second in his heat and third overall in the men's 200m dash with a time of 21.11. His time moves him to ninth on USC's all-time top 10 in the indoor 200m. Freshman Brendon Stewart was second in his heat and fourth overall with a time of 21.52. That time is the 12th-fastest indoor 200m time by a Trojan male. Sophomore Nick Moore had a time of 21.96 to place 10th.
- Sophomore Cassidy Palka got things started for USC by tying for seventh in the women's high jump with a clearance of 5-3.25 (1.61m).
