The USC freshman is the program’s fifth high school beach volleyball All-American
LOS ANGELES – USC beach volleyball freshman Laurel Kujan (Santa Barbara, Calif./Laguna Blanca HS) was named to the 2018 AVCA High School Beach All-America second team on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Kujan is USC's fifth HS All-American and was one of 16 elite athletes selected for the prestigious honor.
Â
The fifth edition of the High School Beach All-America team marks the first time that the AVCA has honored two separate teams and selected eight student-athletes for each group. In 2017, the team was made up of six players and included 10 honorable mention choices. When the award was first created in 2014, the team was made up of only four players.
Â
Kujan was one of 10 2018 All-Americans to hail from the state of California. She earned top-five finishes in the CBVA Huntington Open and the Tour Stop (18U) this summer.
Â
Last year, sophomores Haley Hallgren and Sammy Slater were named to the six-person All-America squad. In 2016, junior Joy Dennis received honorable mention status. In 2015, senior Abril Bustamante was chosen to the team. 2018 graduate Jo Kremer was named to the inaugural HS Beach All-America team in 2014 but committed to play indoor volleyball at Notre Dame before she later transferred to USC.
Â
This past spring, the Women of Troy (27-14) finished as the runner-up at the Pac-12 Championship and were chosen as one of two at-large selections into the 2018 NCAA Championship. The Trojans advanced to the Saturday final at the championship and finished in fourth place. Seventh-year head coach Anna Collier collected her 170th victory this season. Abril Bustamante and Tina Graudina were named AVCA All-Americans and were chosen as the Volleyball Magazine National Pair of the Year.
