USC Advances 6 Individuals & 2 Relays To NCAA Finals
June 07, 2018 | Track & Field, Features
Richards takes 8th in LJ to become USC's 1st All-American in the event since 1999
Madisen Richards placed eighth in the women's long jump and six Trojans in individual events and both relays advanced to event finals during the second day of the 2018 NCAA Track & Field Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. today (June 7).
- Madisen Richards saved her best for last, literally. The senior advanced to the women's long jump finals in eighth place by having a third-round jump of 20-10.50/6.36m (+2.6w) to make it to the finals. She then had a foul and a jump of 20-1.75, so she had dropped to ninth with just one jump remaining. In her final collegiate long jump attempt she busted out a PR of 21-0.75/6.42m (+2.0) to claim eighth place and earn All-America honors in the event. Richards moved from ninth to fifth on USC's all-time long jump list and also earned the Trojans their first point in the team competition. She became USC's first women's long jump first-team All-American since Pam Simpson placed third in 1999.
- USC began the day with Angie Annelus, Kendall Ellis, Deanna Hill and TeeTee Terry running in the women's 4x100m relay second semifinal. They won their heat with a time of 42.97 to automatically advance to Saturday's final in the event.
- The women's 100m hurdles semifinal was next for the Trojans and it would be a tough result to swallow. USC had four runners finish in the top 13, but the top finisher was Anna Cockrell in ninth, so none of USC's short hurdlers would advance. Mecca McGlaston was in the first heat and she placed fifth with a PR of 12.98 (+2.0) to finish 11th overall. Her time moved her from tied for seventh to seventh all alone on USC's all-time list. Anna Cockrell and Chanel Brisset were next in the second heat. Cockrell placed third by matching her PR with a time of 12.88 (+1.4) and would have to await the results of the final heat. After the final heat was complete, she was bumped down to ninth, missing the final by .003 seconds (12.873 to 12.876). Brissett had a time of 13.02 (+1.4) to finish fourth in the heat and 12th overall. Dior Hall ran in the final heat and posted a time of 13.05 (+1.7) to finish fourth in her semifinal and 13th overall.
- The women's 100m dash was next and both TeeTee Terry and Deanna Hill advanced to Saturday's final. Terry ran 11.08 to finish third in her heat by .003 seconds (11.071 to 11.074). When all was said and done, she qualified on time with the fourth-fastest 100m of the day. Deanna Hill won the won the second semifinal with a time of 11.17 (+3.1w) to automatically advance to the final. Her time was seventh among the qualifiers. Angie Annelus also ran in the second semifinal and had a time of 11.28 (+3.1w) to finish fifth in the heat and 15th overall. She earns second-team All-America honors in the event. Five of the finalists are seniors and Terry is the only freshman to make the women's 100m final.
- Kendall Ellis automatically advanced to the women's 400m dash final by winning the second semifinal heat with a time of 51.38. Her time ended up third-fastest among the qualifiers. Kyra Constantine had a time of 53.18 to place sixth in the last semifinal and finished 19th overall. She earns honorable mention All-America in the event.
- Anna Cockrell had a season-best time of 56.07 to win the first women's 400m hurdles semifinal heat to automatically advance to the final on Saturday. Her time would end up being the second-fastest on the day. Shante Robinson ran in the same semifinal heat as Cockrell and finished fourth with a time of 58.24. She would end up 12th overall and earn second-team All-America honors in the event. Robinson was one of just three freshmen who reached the NCAA semifinals in the event, and one was the all-time collegiate record holder in the event.
- Angie Annelus had a wind-aided PR of 22.52 (+2.2w) to take second in the first women's 200m semifinal and automatically advanced to the final. She ended up with the fourth-fastest time among the qualifiers to Saturday's final. TeeTee Terry had a time of 22.82 (+1.0) to take fourth in the second semifinal and finished 11th overall. She earned second-team All-America honors in the event. Deanna Hill had a time of 22.78 (-0.3) to place fourth in the final semifinal and eighth overall to grab the final spot for the final. USC is the only team with two 200m qualifiers.
- USC closed out the day by winning its 4x400m relay heat with a season-best time of 3:29.44 to automatically advance to the final on Saturday. Their time moved them into ninth on USC's all-time list. Deanna Hill daringly split the Baylor and LSU runners towards the end of the third leg to give the Trojans the lead and LSU filed a protest, but the move was deemed legal. USC had the third-fastest qualifying time to the finals.
