Nine Trojans advance to NCAA quarterfinals tomorrow
Rai Benjamin set the school record in the 400m hurdles and 13 Trojans earned a berth at the 2018 NCAA T&F Championships during the second day of the 2018 NCAA West Regional hosted by Sacramento State in Sacramento, Calif. today (May 25). In addition, USC had nine athletes advance to NCAA quarterfinal rounds tomorrow. USC had a perfect day on the track as every athlete that competed either qualified for the NCAA Championships or advanced to an event quarterfinal tomorrow.
- Rai Benjamin provided the highlight of the day by winning his men's 400m hurdles quarterfinal heat and automatically advancing to the NCAA Championships with a PR and USC record-time of 47.98. That time is currently second in the world and broke two-time Olympic gold medalist Felix Sanchez' USC record of 48.33 set in 2000. Cameron Samuel took third in his heat with a time of 50.67 to also automatically advance to nationals.
- The women's 400m hurdlers followed suit in qualifying for the NCAA Championships as Anna Cockrell won the third heat with a time of 56.29, the top qualifying time on the day. Shante Robinson was in the same heat and finished fourth with a PR of 58.02 to grab one of the non-automatic qualifying spots. Robinson ended up with the eighth-fastest qualifying time of the day.
- The first event on the track for the Trojans was the women's 100m hurdles and it couldn't have gone better as all five Trojans advanced to tomorrow's quarterfinal. First, Mecca McGlaston took third in her heat and was 10th overall with a time of 13.28 (+1.4) to automatically advance. Next, Dior Hall was first in her heat and first overall with a time of 13.03 (+0.0) in the third heat, followed by Anna Cockrell who was second in the heat and fourth overall with a time of 13.05 (+0.0). Lyndsey Lopes was fifth in her heat with a time of 13.65 (+1.1) and grabbed the final qualifying spot on time. Chanel Brissett took second in the final heat and was seventh overall with a time of 13.08 (+0.4).
- Michael Norman then automatically advanced to the NCAA Championships in the 400m dash by winning his heat with a time of 44.67. That was the fastest time on the day. Ricky Morgan Jr. finished fourth in the same heat with a time of 46.17 and had to wait it out. As it turned out, he grabbed the final non-automatic qualifier and had the 11th-fastest time to also advance to nationals in the event.
- Kendall Ellis then also took care of business in the women's 400m quarterfinals, winning her heat with the fastest time on the day of 51.03. Kyra Constantine had a collegiate-best time of 52.58 to take fifth in the second heat and would have to wait it out to see if she would advance. As it turned out, she grabbed the final spot to nationals by .005 seconds (52.571 to 52.576).
- T.J. Brock took care of business by taking third in the first heat of the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.32 (+0.9) to automatically advance to the NCAA Championships in the event. His time turned out to be seventh among the qualifiers.

Terry was first in the first heat and second overall with a time of 11.12 (+1.5), Hill was second in the first heat and fourth overall with a season-best wind-legal time of 11.21 (+1.5) and Annelus was third in the third heat and sixth overall with a PR of 11.25 (+1.5).
