Sophomore Cheng Jin fired a 4-under 68 and freshman Issei Tanabe turned in a 71 to lead USC during the second round of the NCAA Pacific Regional at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, Calif., on Tuesday (May 15), but the Trojans are still facing an uphill climb to advance to the NCAA Championships.
The Trojans, looking to earn their 12th consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships final, are in 10th heading into the final round at 3-over 579 (295-284). They improved by 11 shots today but are still 10 strokes back of the fifth and final qualifying spot out of the region. Only the top 5 teams from each of the six NCAA regionals will advance to the NCAA Championship finals in Stillwater, Okla., on May 25.
Alabama and Iowa State lead the region at 14-under 562 with Kansas third (563), Stanford fourth (568) and TCU fifth (569). Oregon and Colorado are tied for sixth (572) with LSU and North Carolina Greensboro tied for eighth (576) ahead of USC.
Jin is tied for 10th overall at 4-under 140 (72-68) after his six-birdie day. He was 5-under through 15 before bogeys on 7 and 8. He closed with a birdie on 9 to end his round.
Pac-12 champion Justin Suh is tied for 34th at 1-over 145 (73-72), still looking for one of his trademark hot streaks to generate some momentum for the Trojans.
Tanabe moved into a tie for 52nd at 3-over 147 (76-71) thanks to his 1-under second round while fellow freshman Kaito Onishi is tied for 61st at 5-over 149 (74-75). Sophomore Kyle Suppa is tied for 65th at 6-over 150 (77-73).
USC will tee off beginning at 8:55 a.m. in the final round, paired with Kennesaw State and UC Irvine.
