Lopes & Corrin Win Titles During First Day Of Pac-12 T&F Championships

29 Trojans advance to event finals tomorrow
Lyndsey Lopes won the women's high jump and Courtney Corrin won the women's long jump to highlight USC's action at the 2018 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships hosted by Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. The USC women's team is in second place with 44 points after nine events and had 20 athletes qualify for finals tomorrow. The USC men's team is in seventh place and has 16 points after six events, with nine athletes qualify for finals tomorrow.
- Lyndsey Lopes won the women's high jump despite juggling three events simultaneously. Lopes, who was also competing in the long jump and 100m hurdles at the same time, cleared a PR of 5-10.50 (1.79m) on her final attempt to become USC's first women's conference champion in the event. Lopes passed until 5-6.00/1.68m which she made on her first attempt, then passed at 5-8/1.73m, before coming back to clear 5-9.25/1.76m in her first attempt, which tied her previous career best. After clearing 5-10.50 to win, she tried to clear 5-11.50/1.82, but missed on three attempts. The clearance of 5-10.50/1.79m moves her into 10th place on USC's all-time women's high jump list. Cassidy Palka finished fourth with a season-best clearance of 5-8.00/1.73m and Alexa Harmon-Thomas tied for ninth with a clearance of 5-4.25/1.63m. Lopes and Palka earned USC 15 points in the team competition.
- Courtney Corrin won the women's long jump title in a seesaw battle with teammate Madisen Richards. Richards jumped to the lead with her first jump of 20-9.75/6.34m (+1.9) which tied her PR, then Corrin jumped 20-11.75/6.39m (+2.0) to take the lead. Richards re-took the lead in the fourth round with a wind-aided PR of 21-2.75/6.47m (3.4w) and Corrin took the lead back for good with her winning fifth-round wind-aided jump of 21-4.00/6.50m (3.0w). Lopes finished eighth in the event with a best jump of 19-9.00/6.02m (+4.8w) and Harmon-Thomas placed 18th with a best jump of 18-7.75/5.68m (+2.1w). Corrin became USC's fourth champion in the event at the Pac-12 meet, first since Alexis Faulknor in 2015. USC earned 19 points in the event.
- Dominic Smallwood placed third in the men's long jump with a season-best jump of 24-7.00/7.49m (+1.2). He earned USC six points in the team competition. Jadon Joyner placed 15th in the long jump with a best jump of 22-5.00/6.83m (+2.8w) and Eric Sloan placed 19th with a jump of 18-1.50/5.52m (+1.3) in the first round. His hamstring was bothering him and he passed on his last three attempts and will likely pass on the triple jump tomorrow.
- Nick Ponzio placed fourth in the men's shot put with a best mark of 61-4.75 (18.71m). It was Ponzio's fourth-straight season finishing in the top four in the Pac-12 in the shot put and he earned USC five team points.
- The day began with Joy McArthur in the women's hammer throw and she placed seventh, saving her best throw of 192-3 (58.61m) for her final attempt. That final-round throw moved her from 10th to seventh and earned the Trojans two points. She reached the finals tied for ninth with a throw of 182-8 (55.69m).
- Breana Jemison placed sixth in the women's shot put with her best mark of 52-2.50 (15.91m) coming in the fifth round. She earned USC six points in the team competition.
- Chloe Berry ran 4:29.14 to take sixth in the first heat and 12th overall in the women's 1500m race to advance to tomorrow's final Amber Gore had a time of 4:30.73 to finish eighth in the second heat and 15th overall. The top 12 runners advanced to the final.
- All five of USC's women's 100m hurdlers advanced to the final tomorrow. Anna Cockrell won her heat and was first overall with a time of 12.79 (+2.4w), Dior Hall won her heat and was second overall with a time of 12.88 (+2.8w), Chanel Brissett was second in her heat and fourth overall with a time of 13.12 (+2.4w), Mecca McGlaston was second in her heat and fifth overall with a time of 13.19 (+2.8w) and Lyndsey Lopes was third in her heat and seventh overall with a time of 13.37 (+2.8w).
- Kendall Ellis won her 400m heat with a time of 51.50 and advanced to tomorrow's final with the second-fastest time. Kaelin Roberts won her heat with a time of 52.39 and advances in third. Kyra Constantine was third in her heat and ninth overall with a time of 53.83, grabbing the ninth and final spot in the finals. Kennedy Gillian was sixth in her heat and 17th overall with a time of 55.67.
- Michael Norman won the first heat and was first among qualifiers to the men's 400m final with a time of 46.27. Ricky Morgan Jr. won the second heat with a time of 46.90 to automatically advance to the final and was third overall. Zach Shinnick, in his first race back from injury and first 400m race of the outdoor season, had a time of 47.65 to finish fourth in his heat and 10th overall to just miss out on advancing to the final.
- Five Trojan women's runners advanced to the 100m finals tomorrow. TeeTee Terry won her 100m prelims heat and finished first overall among the qualifiers with a time of 11.14 (+3.2w). Angie Annelus won her heat and was second overall with a time of 11.28 (+2.4w), Deanna Hill was fifth overall with a time of 11.31 (+2.4w), Ky Westbrook was eighth overall with a time of 11.61 (+3.2w) and Chanel Brissett was ninth with a time of 11.70 (+0.5).
- T.J. Brock and Alexander Barnum went first and second in the second heat of the men's 100m dash to automatically advance to the finals, posting times of 10.22 (+2.3w) and 10.45 (+2.3w) respectively.
- Robert Ford won his 800m qualifying heat with a time of 1:49.67 to automatically advance to tomorrow's final. Matthew Myrtue had a PR of 1:51.87 to finish sixth in his heat and 12th overall.
- Anna Cockrell had a time of 58.01 to win her women's 400m hurdles heat and qualify first to the finals. Shante Robinson had a time of 59.34 to take third in her 400m hurdles heat and qualify for the finals with the eighth-fastest time.
- Rai Benjamin really eased into a season-best time of 49.80 to post the fastest men's 400m hurdles time in the prelims. Cameron Samuel took second in his heat with a time of 51.44 to automatically advance to the final. His time was third overall.
- Deanna Hill won her 200m heat to advance automatically with a time of 22.75 (+2.7w). She finished fourth overall. Angie Annelus had a PR of 22.64 (+1.4) to take second in the second heat and Kendall Ellis had a PR of 22.71 (+1.4) to take third in the same heat, both advancing to the finals with the second and third-fastest times. TeeTee Terry placed second in the first heat with a time of 23.10 (+0.9) to automaticall advance, eight overall. As in the 100m final, all nine qualifiers are either from USC or Oregon.
- Michael Norman won the second heat of the men's 200m dash with a time of 20.71 (+1.5) and Ricky Morgan was second with a time of 21.18 (+1.5) to automatically advance to tomorrow's final. T.J. Brock was fifth in the same heat and 16th overall with a time of 21.71 (+1.5). Alexander Barnum was a scratch after his hamstring felt tight in the 100m dash, so he will be held out the rest of the meet.
