2018 Spring Practice #12: Notes
April 07, 2018 | Football, USC Ripsit Blog, Features
The USC football team enjoyed a free-flowing scrimmage on Saturday before heading over to the Swim With Mike fundraising event.
- USC head coach Clay Helton called today's scrimmage "the best day offensively that we've had in the spring," pointing out the offensive line and running backs, specifically.
- QB Jack Sears connected on a few deep balls with WR Velus Jones Jr. (pictured below), who has shown much improvement this spring. "The light's really come on for Velus," Helton said. "With Deontay [Burnett] and Steven Mitchell being gone, he's been pushed to the forefront and been challenged to do a little bit more. That means he's having to take more on mentally ... and his third year in the system, the picture is clear for him. There's no confusion. Confusion creates hesitation, and hesitation's going to get you beat. You can see his clarity of he knows what's going on, and he's such a productive player when that happens."
- The defense stepped up as well today, with big pick-sixes by seniors Iman Marshall and Jonathan Lockett.
- USC QB coach Bryan Ellis was back on the field today after taking time off to welcome his baby daughter, Zoey, into the world.
