The Women of Troy fell to the Bruins in a 3-1 decision
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 2-seeded USC beach volleyball team (25-12) fell to rival No. 1-ranked and top-seeded UCLA (35-3) in the 2018 Pac-12 Championship match at Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium on Saturday, April 28.
The Trojans had dropped an earlier match to the Bruins and fought back through the contender's bracket for another shot, but dropped matches at the Nos. 1, 3, and 4 positions in the loss.
UCLA scored its first point at the fourth court when Mac May and Elise Zappier defeated senior Jenna Belton and freshman Maja Kaiser, 21-17, 21-17. The Trojans responded for a replicate score at court five where freshman Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto took down Izzy Carey and Megan Muret.
In an upset at the top court, junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina had their 19-match winning streak snapped in a 21-19, 21-15 loss to Megan and Nicole McNamara. The win at No. 1 gave UCLA a 2-1 lead in the dual. Bustamante and Graudina were chosen to the all-tournament team.
At court two, senior Terese Cannon and freshman Sammy Slater won their first set, 23-21, over Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil but trailed, 18-15, in the second set when their match was suspended. At court three, sophomores Cammie Dorn and Joy Dennis were defeated, 21-19, 21-16, to secure the clinching point for the Bruins.
USC now awaits the decision of the NCAA selection committee, which will announce the field of eight teams in a live show on NCAA.com at 4 p.m. PT on Sunday (April 29).
