April 10, 2018 | Women's Beach Volleyball, Features
The Women of Troy fell to the Waves for the fourth time this season and dropped to 17-9 overall
LOS ANGELES – The fourth-ranked USC beach volleyball team (17-9) suffered a third straight loss in a 3-2 decision to No. 2 Pepperdine (19-3) at Merle Norman Stadium on Tuesday, April 10. The loss was the fourth consecutive to the Waves since USC defeated Pepperdine, 3-2, in the 2017 NCAA title match.
The Waves scored the first two points of the dual with wins at the fourth and fifth positions. Skylar Caputo and Alexis Filippone took down USC's duo of senior Jenna Belton and freshman Haley Hallgren, 21-19, 21-12, at four; and then Maddie Dilfer and Nikki Lyons defeated junior Katrina Kernochan and senior Alexandra Poletto, 21-18, 21-19, at five for the 2-0 lead.
The Trojans evened the dual with wins at the top two courts. In straight sets, junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina earned a 21-17, 21-15 win over Deanha Kraft and Corinne Quiggle at the top court to score the first USC point. The Trojans equalized the dual when senior Terese Cannon and freshman Sammy Slater fought back in the second set to complete a 21-15, 21-19 win over Heidi Dyer and Gigi Hernandez at court three.
Despite the thrilling finish, the Waves maintained composure and completed a straight-set win at court two where Brook Bauer and Madalyn Roh defeated sophomore Joy Dennis and junior Brianna Sizemore, 21-13, 21-19. It was Sizemore's first action since March 11, due to a lower leg injury. The loss at court two sealed the dual for the Waves and sent the Trojans to an 0-3 record in home duals.
In a non-counting match, freshman Maja Kaiser and senior Jo Kremer teamed up for a 21-15, 21-16 win over Jordan Ferrari and Katie Gavin at the No. 6 position.
Next, the Women of Troy now head to the Pacific Northwest for the Pac-12 North Invitational hosted by Washington. USC will play four duals on Alki Beach in Seattle, Wash., and gets started with the Huskies on Saturday, April 14, at noon PT. The Trojans also face No. 14 Stanford at 2 p.m. that same day. On Sunday, April 15, USC meets No. 13 California at 10 a.m., and Oregon at 1 p.m.
