Trojans tied for eighth at 5-over.
Junior Justin Suh, the current NCAA No. 1, fired a 4-under 68 while sophomore Cheng Jin carded a 2-under 70 to lead the USC men's golf team on the first day of the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Monday (March 5) in Las Vegas.
The Trojans combined for a 5-over 293 and are 11 strokes back of first-place Florida as they play for their third straight title at the event.
Suh registered his 14th round under 70 in 18 tries with his 68 which left him tied for second, one back of the lead. The San Jose, Calif., product, vying for his fourth win this year and seventh straight top 9, eagled 18 to go with five birdies. He had a rare double bogey on 11 and a bogey on 14.
Jin, fresh off his 17-shot win at the PGA Tour China Q School, matched his second best round of the season to tie for ninth at 2-under. He mixed five birdies today against three bogeys.
Freshman Issei Tanabe is tied for 54th at 5-over 77, freshman Kaito Onishi is tied for 65th at 6-over 78 and sophomore Kyle Suppa is tied for 70th at 7-over 79.
The Trojans will tee off with Oklahoma and Alabama beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday in the second round.
