History of No-Hitters at USC
March 20, 2018 | Baseball, USC Ripsit Blog, Features
Last week, a trio of Trojans pitched the seventh no-hitter in the history of USC Baseball.
Freshman Kyle Hurt (7.2 IP), sophomore Austin Manning (0.1 IP) and sophomore Connor Lunn (1.0 IP) worked together to shut out Utah in a 2-0 win at Dedeaux Field last Thursday night. It was the first no-hitter for the team since 2000, and the first nine-inning no hitter for the team since 1986.
USC pulled off the first no-hitter in program history all the way back on March 26, 1937. Joe Gonzales pitched nine spotless innings to propel the Trojans to an 8-0 win over Stanford.
Almost 24 years later to the day (March 23, 1961), Jerry Merz pitched the second no-hitter in school history — a 3-0 win over BYU.
It didn't take long for lightning to strike again. On April 5, 1966, Ron Cook went eight innings without allowing a hit before the game was called. An explosive Trojan offense helped him seal a 12-0 win over Pacific.
Russ McQueen was the next Trojan to no-hit his opponents, and the most recent single pitcher to post a nine-inning no hitter. He blanked Cal in a 7-0 win on March 30, 1974.
On February 18, 1986, USC posted its only other multi-player no-hitter in program history. Brad Brink went 7 innings and Brian Brooks finished off the final 2 in a 2-1 win over Cal State Los Angeles.
Prior to last Thursday, USC's most recent no-hitter came on March 4, 2000. Rik Currier no-hit Mississippi State in 5 innings before the game was called with USC up, 7-1.
The Trojans are 11-5 on the year and 2-1 in conference play after taking the series vs. Utah. They're back in action tonight at UC Irvine at 6:30 p.m.
