The Trojans’ top pair went undefeated over the weekend to help USC to three victories over AVCA-ranked opponents
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The USC beach volleyball pair of junior Abril Bustamante (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Tina Graudina (Jurmala, Latvia) was chosen for the program's first-ever American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)/CollegeBeachVB.com National Pair of the Week award on Tuesday, March 13.
Bustamante and Graudina went 4-0 at the top position to help propel the Women of Troy to three wins over AVCA-ranked opponents and didn't drop a single set in Graudina's first full weekend of work since her return from injury.
The two Trojans defeated Florida International's Margherita Bianchin and Federica Frasca, 21-19, 21-15, to help USC take a 4-1 win over the 13th-ranked Panthers. It was the first loss of the season for Bianchin and Frasca (9-1), who are ranked internationally by the FIVB. Against No. 9 LSU, Bustamante and Graudina fought off a challenge from Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss to come away with a 25-23, 21-17 victory and scored the only point in USC's loss to the Tigers.
In a dual against No. 20 TCU, USC's top tandem took a straight-set win over Jillian Bergeson and Jaelyn Greene and put on a dominant display with a 21-15, 21-4 final result. The Trojans swept the Horned Frogs and later took a 3-2 win over No. 5 Florida State when Bustamante and Graudina served notice with a 21-9, 21-8 performance to beat the Seminoles' Macy Jerger and Tory Paranagua. The wins pushed the USC duo to 5-0 overall with just one set lost this season.
No. 3-ranked USC is in Hawai'i this weekend for the 2018 Outrigger Resorts Hawaii Invitational. University of Hawai'i, Manoa, will host the tournament on Queen's Beach in Honolulu. The Trojans face No. 12 Grand Canyon, No. 5-ranked host Hawai'i twice, and Nebraska twice, in duals on Saturday and Sunday (March 17-18).
