No. 2 USC Beach Splits 4-1 Matches on First Day of East Meets West

The Women of Troy defeated Florida International but fell to Louisiana State under wind and rain in Manhattan Beach
MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. – The No. 2-ranked USC beach volleyball team (6-4) split matches as it claimed a 4-1 win over No. 13 Florida International (6-2) and suffered a 4-1 loss to No. 9 Louisiana State (6-4) on the first day of the East Meets West Challenge at the Manhattan Beach Pier on Saturday, March 10.
Under constant wind and rain, the Women of Troy fought through three three-setters and emerged with a victory over the Panthers in their morning match. Senior Terese Cannon and freshman Sammy Slater teamed to provide the clinching point from court two with a 21-17, 19-21, 21-19 win over Lina Bernier and Dorina Klinger.
With just one hour between matches, the Trojans returned to the court on short order but couldn't complete the day unscathed as the Tigers became just the sixth team ever to hand USC a loss in dual play. The Trojans' only point came from the top court where junior Abril Bustamante and freshman Tina Graudina took a 25-23, 21-17 win over Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss.
The Women of Troy return to Manhattan Beach Pier tomorrow to take on No. 5-ranked Florida State and No. 20 TCU in duals at noon PT and 4 p.m. PT respectively.
