USC Women Fall to UCLA and Pepperdine

The No. 1-ranked USC beach volleyball team lost 3-2 to both No. 3 UCLA and No. 5 Pepperdine on Wednesday (Feb. 28). This is the first time USC has lost two-straight matches at home since the program began in 2012. It is also the first time the Trojans have lost two matches in a row since 2013 when they lost three in a row. USC is now 4-2 on the season.
In the first match against UCLA, the Bruins claimed the first point of the dual with a 21-12, 21-12 victory by Izzy Carey and Megan Muret over USC's Alexandra Poletto and Maja Kaiser on court five. The Trojans tied up the score as senior pair Jo Kremer and Jenna Belton defeated UCLA's Mac May and Savvy Simo 21-12, 21-15 on court four.
UCLA pushed ahead once again as Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil beat USC's Brianna Sizemore and Joy Dennis 21-11, 21-18 on court two. The Women of Troy continued to battle as the duo of Haley Hallgren and Sammy Slater tallied another point on the scoreboard for USC with their win over the Bruin pair of Madi Yeomans and Elise Zappia 21-19, 21-18 on court three.
UCLA would have the final word as twin sisters Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara beat USC's Terese Cannon and Abril Bustamante on court one with a final score of 21-17 21-18.
In USC's second match of the afternoon the Trojans struck first when Alexandra Poletto and Maja Kaiser defeated Pepperdine's Nikki Lyons and Kaity Bailey 21-19, 21-16 on court five. The Waves evened out the score by earning a point on court four as Skylar Caputo and Alexis Fiippone beat USC's Jo Kremer an Jenna Belton 19-21, 25-23, 15-12.
Pepperdine took the lead again as Brook Bauer and Madalyn Roh claimed the win over USC's Terese Cannon and Abril Bustamante 21-19, 21-18 on court one. USC fought back on court three in an exciting three-set match as Haley Hallgren and Sammy Slater beat Pepperdine's Gigi Hernandez and Heidi Dyer 21-14, 16-21, 17-15 to tie up the overall score at 2-2.
The attention turned to court two where Pepperdine's Corinne Quiggle and Deahna Kraft defeated USC's Brianna Sizemore and Joy Dennis 21-18, 19-21, 15-13 to clinch the match for the Waves.
USC's next action will take the team to Zuma Beach in Malibu, Calif. on Saturday, March 3 where the Trojans will challenge Pepperdine and UCLA once again. The Women of Troy will face Pepperdine at 9 a.m. and UCLA at 10:15 a.m.
