USC senior beats teammate Jake DeVine in the singles final in Rolling Hills.
ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, CALIF. — USC senior Jack Jaede stormed his way to his first collegiate singles title with a winning run to the Jack Kramer Collegiate singles championship this weekend. Up against teammate Jake DeVine in the title match, Jaede was able to post a 6-4, 6-2 victory to claim the crown.
DeVine and Jaede were the only Trojans in the tournament. In doubles, the duo went 1-1, winning in the Round of 16 before taking a tight loss in the quarterfinals. In singles, though, DeVine and Jaede were able to make deep runs to make it an all-Trojan title match. Seeded No. 3 and No. 2 in the singles draw, respectively, both DeVine and Jaede posted three consecutive straight-set wins to stake a claim on a semifinal slot.Â
DeVine's semifinal opponent, UCLA's Keegan Smith, took a walkover due to injury. That pushed DeVine along to the final, while Jaede had a semifinal bout against No. 4 seed Michael Genender of Stanford. Jaede stood his ground in that one, fighting through a three-set battle for a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win to earn his place in the title match against his teammate. In the final, Jaede kept his winning momentum going as he topped fellow Trojan DeVine 6-4-62 to take the Jack Kramer Collegiate crown.
