USC Wins 6 Events On The Final Day Of The MLK Jr. Invitational

USC won six events including Zach Shinnick and Kyra Constantine capturing the 400m races, Ky Wesbrook the women's 60m dash and Dominic Smallwood the men's triple jump during the final day of the Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational held at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, N.M. today (Jan. 20).
Shinnick won the men's 400m dash with a time of 46.49, to take home a title in his first collegiate race. His time moved him into second place on USC's all-time 400m indoor list. Cameron Samuels placed eighth with a time of 48.79.
Kyra Constantine won the women's 400m dash with a PR of 53.20. Her time moved her from eighth to seventh on USC's all-time list. Kayla Richardson placed sixth with a time of 54.94 and Kennedy Gillian took 10th with a PR of 56.20.
Ky Westbrook won the women's 60m dash final with a time of 7.29, followed by teammate Zaria Francis in second with her best time of the day of 7.34. Twanisha Terry advanced to the finals in first place, but sat out the final as she had already run two races on the day. In the semifinals, Terry advanced first with an improvement to 7.31 to better her 10th-place standing on USC's all-time list, while Francis improved to 7.41 to advance in third place. Westbrook won her heat and advanced second overall with a time of 7.32. Terry advanced to the semifinals with the fastest time in the prelims of 7.34 to move to 10th on USC's all-time list, while Francis advanced second with a time of 7.44.
T.J. Brock placed second in the men's 60m dash finals with a PR of 6.65. That time moved him from sixth to fifth on USC's all-time list. Alexander Barnum had also advanced to the finals, but was held out after having run two races. In the men's 60m semifinals, Brock ran 6.70 to advance second to the finals, .01 behind the leader. Brock also moved to 6th on USC's all-time list at the time. Barnum had a time of 6.85 to take second in his semifinal heat and advance in 6th. Nick Moore had a time of 6.97 to finish 12th overall. Barnun had a PR of 6.79 in the prelims to advance to the semifinals with the fastest time. His time moved him into 9th on USC's all-time list.
Dominic Smallwood won the men's triple jump competition, while only taking three jumps. As it would turn out, it was the three farthest jumps of the day, with his best being 50-10.25/15.50.
USC had the only four college hurdlers reach the women's 60m hurdles final and Dior Hall took second with a time of 7.98. Right behind her in third was Anna Cockrell with a time of 8.02. Chanel Brissett took fifth with a time of 8.15 which improved her sixth-place standing on USC's all-time list. Mecca McGlaston placed eighth with a time of 8.35. In the women's 60m hurdles semifinals, Hall ran a PR of 7.94 to advance to the finals with the second-fastest time, first among collegians. Her time also moved her from third to second on USC's all-time list in the event. Cockrell advanced out of the semifinals with the fourth-fastest time of 8.08, Brissett in her debut ran 8.17 to advance in fifth place and moved to 6th on USC's all-time list. McGlaston improved to 8.30 in the semis to advance in seventh. Shante Robinson posted a time of 8.51 to finish 11th. McGlaston had the fastest time in the prelims of 8.38 to advance to the semifinals. Robinson ran 8.60 to advance to the semifinals with the fifth-fastest time in the preliminary round.
Breana Jemison took second in the women's shot put with a mark of 56-8.00/17/27m. She entered the finals in fourth and moved up to second with that throw. Her mark also moved her into second on USC's women's indoor shot put list.
Matthew Katnik took third in the men's shot put with a best mark of 62-9.25/19.13m. Nick Ponzio placed fifth in the shot put with a best throw of 59-2.75/18.05m.
The Trojans closed out the meet with a pair of wins in the 4x400 relays. The women's "A" team of Kendall Ellis, Cockrell, Deanna Hill and Constantine won with a time of 3:38.92. USC's "B" team of Gillian, Lyndsey Lopes, Robinson and Jennifer Daly took second with a time of 3:47.97.
The men's 4x400m relay team of Ricky Morgan, Rohani, Samuel and Shinnick also won with a time of 3:10.97, the seventh-fastest time all-time by a Trojan quartet.
