Stanford Thursday: Notes
September 07, 2017 | Football, USC Ripsit Blog, Features
On Thursday, the Trojans hit the practice field for the last time before they take on Stanford on Saturday, Sept. 9.
- Starting RT Chuma Edoga (knee) practiced and is expected to play Saturday. S Bubba Bolden (knee) will probably be out for the game, while WR Michael Pittman Jr. got significant work and is ahead of schedule, but remains doubtful, per USC head coach Clay Helton.
- Stanford will be ILB Cameron Smith's first full game of the season, which Helton said will be "a confidence builder" as he is "kind of like Sam [Darnold] on the other side of the ball, he's kind of that quarterback of the defense."
- Helton mentioned the team has talked all week about first down efficiency, as he believes Stanford is a master at short third down conversions. "We've preached to our kids how important first down is and getting those second-and-longs and third-and-longs where they're a little bit more uncomfortable," Helton said. "I think that's going to be the key to the game."
- With Pittman out for Saturday, Helton said he challenged the young wide receiving corps at practice and told them that, "This is going to be one of those games, it always is, that you have to make the tough catches."
