Name: Jack Sears
Position: QB
Class: Freshman
Size: 6-foot-3, 200 lbs.
Age: 19
High School (Hometown): San Clemente (San Clemente, CA)
Game: Sears continues USC's recent trend of mobile quarterbacks as he has the legs to buy time and create outside of the pocket. However, like Sam Darnold, he is looking to do damage with his arm first and even when he escapes, he keeps his eyes downfield to find open playmakers. If all goes well, Sears will sit out this season as the third quarterback on the depth chart and build himself up to compete for the starting job when Darnold departs.
Prep Career: Sears, who enrolled at USC this spring after graduating from high school early, made Prep Star All-American Dream Team, USA Today All-California second team, Cal-Hi Sports All-State first team, All-CIF Division 2 Offensive Player of the Year and more as a senior in 2016. He led the Tritons to the 2016 CIF State 1-A championship and CIF Southern Section Division 2 title after throwing for 2,602 yards with 37 TDs and running for 1,135 yards with 9 TDs. He backed up current USC QB Sam Darnold as a 2014 sophomore before stepping into a starting role in 2015.
QBs coach Tyson Helton on Sears: "He's made continual improvement every single day. He's got a great attitude. He takes time away from the game when we're not in meetings and studies himself, and that's a good thing. He will continue to progress, and I'm looking forward to the future with him."
Fun Fact: Sears boasted a 4.0 GPA in high school.
