Alex Anthony Named a Candidate for the Senior CLASS Award

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Redshirt senior forward Alex Anthony was named a candidate for the 2017 Senior CLASS Award for collegiate soccer. The award is given to a NCAA Division I senior student-athlete who has notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Anthony is an outstanding student-athlete, having finished her undergraduate coursework in just three years from the University of Maryland, College Park where she was a double major in sociology and psychology. She was a member of the Dean's List, Senior Marshall, Academic All-Big Ten, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a member of the Phi Eta Sigma honors society, UMD Honors College with an impressive 3.895 GPA.
At USC she is working on her Master's of Public Policy, working as a research assistant in the Center for Risk & Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE). The center works in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, aiming to improve the nation's security. In her position she analyzes and researches existing literature, completes data/acquisition, and performs project management across a range of projects dealing with the economic impact of terrorism events and natural disaster events.
She also has completed an internship with U.S. Senator Michael Bennet back in her hometown of Denver.
Alex has been active in the community, as she was the President of the UMD chapter of The Grassroot Project, a D1 varsity athlete nonprofit organization that serves to educate at-risk youth in Washington, DC about HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention through lessons and grades. She coordinated with senior administration to organize and schedule programs in over 20 area schools and conducted bi-annual training for new coaches.
She is also the co-founder of The One Ball Humanitarian Effort, which sent soccer balls to U.S. Marine troops in Afghanistan in order to build trust among U.S. soldiers and Afghani citizens. She organized membership efforts with five soccer clubs across Colorado, collecting over 300 balls to ship to Afghanistan along with ball pumps, cones, cleats and first aid kits.
Alex is a standout on the field as well, as she was a member of USC's national championship squad in 2016, tying for the team lead with 10 goals while earning All-Pac-12 Second Team honors. She came to USC after competing for two seasons at Maryland. In 2015 as a redshirt sophomore Alex started all 19 games, finished tied for second in the Big Ten with 10 goals. She broke the Maryland single-season record and led the Big Ten with 91 shots. This season Alex is tied for the team lead with two goals through four games played as the team is 3-1. She is a leader on the squad as well as a member of the team's leadership group.
The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. ?
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2017 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships in December.
