Every year, young men come from near and far to don Cardinal and Gold as members of USC's football team. But for sophomore linebacker Oluwole Betiku Jr., 'far' is an understatement.
Betiku was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, the most populous city in all of Africa. When he was a teenager, he jumped at the chance to attend a basketball camp 11 hours away from his hometown, where he ultimately ended up training with football coaches who promised that the most talented young men could make their way to America.
Betiku made the cut and moved out to Washington, D.C. briefly, before making a home in Los Angeles and playing at Serra High School.
After signing with USC, Betiku arrived in the spring of 2016 and played in five games his true freshman season. The linebacker is looking for an expanded role as the 2017 season unfurls.
