Salute The Season
August 21, 2017 | Football, Trojan Athletic Fund, USC Ripsit Blog, Features
On Friday evening, USC hosted its annual Salute to Troy event, celebrating the Trojans' athletic accomplishments over the last year and kicking off a new football season.
USC Athletic Director Lynn Swann began the evening by inviting USC's two 2016 national championship teams up to the stage. USC women's soccer, which won its second NCAA title in 2016, and USC women's beach volleyball, which won its third straight national title in 2016, showed off their hardware in front of a crowd of 3,000 fans.
Swann also honored two Trojan football teams from years past. Members of USC's 1967 national championship team -- celebrating their 50th anniversary -- and USC's 1992 team -- celebrating their 25th anniversary -- were called on stage to speak. USC football alumni Bruce Gelker and Jim Hardy were singled out in the crowd as well, with 94-year-old Hardy, who played QB for the Trojans from 1942-44, named a surprise recipient of the Marv Goux Award.
USC football's student-athletes signed autographs and took photos with fans throughout the night before being announced one-by-one on stage. The night also featured performances by the Spirit of Troy and the USC Song Girls, and an appearance by Traveler IX. Senior LB Uchenna Nwosu closed out the event by thanking the Trojan Family for its unwavering support.
