Since 1880, USC has been a beacon in Los Angeles. Though it's attracted students and student-athletes from all over the world, L.A.'s homegrown talent holds a special place in the heart of the university.
USC defensive tackle Rasheem Green, an L.A. native who attended Serra High School before donning the Cardinal and Gold, notes how proud he is to play for his hometown team.
"When you go home, people know who you are because they watch you play on Saturdays. You feel special," said Green. "There are so many Trojan fans in this city, it's cool to be part of something that represents L.A. as a whole."
Green started all but one game last season, racking up 55 tackles, a team-high 6.0 sacks, a conference-high two blocked field goals and two forced fumbles.
Green asserts that he wouldn't be where he is today without his family, friends and the people of L.A. as a whole.
"I love the people of LA," he said. "They have shaped me into the person that I am today. Even though there are some bad parts of LA, I think all the good really overshadows the bad."
Heading into his junior season at Troy, Green knows he carries the hopes of millions of Angelenos on his shoulders.
"I feel like when I say, 'I'm from L.A.,' I'm part of something bigger than myself."
