On Sunday, USC swimming & diving celebrates its 2016-17 season at its annual team banquet.
In addition to looking back on a season which saw the women's team finish ninth at NCAAs and the men sixth, USC will honor two Trojan teams from the past which are celebrating special anniversaries.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of USC's 1977 NCAA men's national championship team, coached by legendary Trojan Peter Daland. The team dominated the NCAA Tournament, winning eight events and finishing 181 points ahead of second-place Alabama, a record-setting margin that stood for 15 years.
The senior class of '77 went undefeated for four straight years, delivering a national title every time, including USC's most recent.
While 2017 marks the 40th anniversary of USC's last men's team title, it marks the 20th anniversary of USC's first women's team title.
For the first 15 years that the NCAA hosted Division I women's swimming and diving championships, only three different teams claimed the crown. But in 1997, USC broke in. Behind stellar performances by Olympians Kristine Quance Julian and Lindsay (Benko) Mintenko, the Women of Troy went from fifth place to second, then lunged into first on the last day of competition.
That team stands as the only women's team in program history to win a national title.
