Heading into his redshirt senior season, USC WR Steven Mitchell Jr. has already accomplished nearly everything on which he's set his sights.
He earned a scholarship to play at USC and won a Rose Bowl in Cardinal and Gold. He received his Bachelor's degree as a junior and is set to graduate with a Master's in December. He also became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, an organization he's admired his whole life.
As a Kappa, Mitchell has been exposed to people and experiences outside the realm of football, and has become a more vocal leader.
"Once I started playing football, I felt like I was more calm. I had this helmet on, so people couldn't really see me," Mitchell said. "But now, I really pride myself on being in front of a camera or an audience without that helmet, without that safety net. Before being a Kappa, I was always shy. I was obviously good at football, but I was never a vocal leader. But something that came from the whole process of being a Kappa was that you can't just be silent. You have to be a vocal leader and rely on your brothers to get you through the process."
As part of USC's Black History Month celebration, we explored Mitchell's growth and his achievements as a member of the historic fraternity.
