December 13, 2017 | Football, Features
Helton is one of seven finalists for honor.
For the second consecutive year, USC head coach Clay Helton has been named a finalist for the Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award.
Â
Joining Helton as 2017 finalists for the nation's top coach are Wisconsin's Paul Chryst, Nebraska's Scott Frost (formerly with Central Florida), Auburn's Gus Malzahn, Army's Jeff Monken, Georgia's Kirby Smart and Clemson's Dabo Swinney.
Â
The winner will be announced on Jan. 10, 2018, during the awards dinner and ceremony at the Hilton Americas-Houston. The presentation will be shown live on FOX College Sports.
Â
Now in its 32nd year, the Bear Bryant Award—presented by the American Heart Association and Marathon Oil Corporation--recognizes the country's top college football coaches for their contributions both on and off the field. It is the only college coaching honor selected after all bowl games have concluded and is voted on by the National Sports Media Association.

Â
Helton, who is 27-9 (.750) in his 4 seasons as USC's head coach, guided the Trojans to an 11-2 in 2017 with wins over No. 14 Stanford twice (including in the Pac-12 Championship Game) and No. 23 Arizona. He is the first USC head coach to have 10-win seasons in each of his first 2 full seasons and he has more wins (21) in his first 2 full seasons than any USC coach. He is 16-0 in the Coliseum. In 2017, his No. 8 ranked Trojans, despite playing all 12 regular season games without a bye, are headed to the Cotton Bowl Classic. He led USC its first Pac-12 title since 2008 by winning the 2017 Pac-12 Championship Game (the first ever by a South Division team). He was the 2017 AP Pac-12 Coach of the Year.
