Rising Up the Rankings

Last year, USC finished fourth in the NACDA Learfield Directors' Cup, which recognizes institutions that demonstrate excellence in athletics. The current year is shaping up to be another good one for USC, as four Trojan teams rank in the Top 20.
USC men's water polo recently usurped the No. 1 spot in the land, a place where they're quite comfortable. The Trojans are 16-1 on the season (1-0 MPSF), with signature wins over then-No. 10 UC Irvine and then-No. 3 Stanford. The Trojans moved from No. 2 to No. 1 after UCI topped UCLA last week. With senior goalie McQuin Baron in the cage, USC boasts the conference's best scoring defense (5.4 goals per game) and with senior Blake Edwards and freshman Marko Vavic on the attack, touts the conference's best scoring offense (16.8 goals per game) as well. The Trojans have outscored their opponents by a total margin of 285-91 heading into tomorrow's matchup with No. 7 Long Beach State.
USC women's soccer, fresh off a 2016 national championship, sits at No. 6 in the nation. The Women of Troy started the season at No. 3, but fell down the rankings after an early loss. They've bounced back to manage an 8-1-1 (2-0-1 Pac-12) record on the season, and haven't lost in over a month. Freshman Savannah DeMelo and junior Leah Pruitt have scored four goals each to lead the third-highest scoring offense in the Pac-12. The sixth-ranked Trojans head to the Grand Canyon State to take on Arizona tomorrow and ASU on Sunday.
USC football is ranked No. 14 in the nation heading into this weekend's battle with Oregon State. The Trojans are 4-1 (2-1 Pac-12) and haven't lost at home in nearly two full calendar years. Quarterback Sam Darnold is completing 64.6 pct of his passes, averaging 277.8 pass yards per game and has tossed 9 touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, LB Uchenna Nwosu has broken up 8 passes, which is more than any other non-DB in the nation.
USC women's volleyball, which has won five straight matches, is currently enjoying a season-high No. 15 ranking. The Trojans are 12-3 with a clean 4-0 mark in Pac-12 play. That undefeated conference record includes a 3-2 comeback win at UCLA last month. The team takes its hot hand to Arizona on Friday and Arizona State on Saturday.
