USC doubles duos set up with quarterfinal and semifinal slots as well.
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC men's tennis team has a powerful contingent going deep into the singles and doubles main draws out at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships. Playing on their home courts at Marks Stadium, the Trojans are looking right at home, with three Trojans through to tomorrow's (Oct. 29) singles semifinals, along with two doubles pairs earning semifinal spots.

USC is guaranteed at least one Trojan in the singles title match thanks to an all-Trojan semifinal set up between sophomore Brandon Holt — the top seed in the tourney — and redshirt junior Tanner Smith. That tilt is set for 10 a.m. tomorrow, at the same time that junior Logan Smith goes up against Azusa Pacific's upset-minded Oliver Frank. Logan Smith worked out an upset of UCLA's Keegan Smith in today's quarterfinals, beating the Bruin in three sets to scoot on through to the semis. Tanner Smith also beat a Bruin to advance, topping UCLA's Max Cressy solidly 6-1, 6-3. Holt, meanwhile, continued his bender of straight-set wins in topping UC Irvine's Sebastian Heim 7-5, 6-2 to earn that spot against his elder teammate tomorrow.
Both Smiths — no relation — have found similar success on the doubles courts. Tanner Smith and junior Laurens Verboven pulled off two tough wins to take a place in the semifinals. Lined up against a BYU pair for the semis, the Cougar duo has withdrawn from tomorrow's match to send the Trojans on to the title match, where they could meet up against fellow Trojans Logan Smith and Jake DeVine. That Trojan pairing has looked strong in doubles play, netting an 8-5 quarterfinal win today to step into tomorrow's semifinals against San Diego's Holmgren/Keerasuntonpong.
To start out the action days ago, USC had three Trojans work their way through qualifying action to make it a daunting lineup of eight USC players in the singles main draw. Henry Ji, Jens Sweaney and Tanner Smith all emerged from qualifying to play in Friday's first round of main draw action. While Smith has rolled on through to the semis, Ji is going strong in consolation play with a semifinal matchup of his own tomorrow.
