No. 21 USC Football Returns To Pac-12 Play At Arizona State
October 22, 2017 | Football, Features
*No. 21 USC, looking to bounce back from its stinging loss at Notre Dame, returns to Pac-12 play when its visits resurgent Arizona State under the lights on ESPN.
*It's the first of 4 straight regular season-ending games for USC against foes from the Pac-12 South Division, where the Trojans control their destiny to the South Division title.
*Tempe is always a challenging destination for USC, as 7 of Troy's 12 losses in the series have occurred there.Â
*Head coach Clay Helton will be looking for his squad, which has had 11 starters miss starts because of injuries this year, to regroup in all phases after its showing in South Bend. Â The Trojan offense, which averages more than 450 total yards and almost 32 points, gets its production from the arm of QB Sam Darnold (already in USC's career Top 10 in passing and total offense as just a sophomore), the legs of TB Ronald Jones II (averaging 6.2 yards per carry in his carry) and the hands of WRs Deontay Burnett (Top 25 nationally in receiving TDs, receiving yards and receptions), Steven Mitchell Jr. and Tyler Vaughns. Â USC's defense is led by ILB Cameron Smith (on his way to leading Troy in tackles for the second consecutive year), DL Christian Rector (the Pac-12 leader in sacks and recovered fumbles), OLB Uchenna Nwosu and Ss Chris Hawkins and Marvell Tell III. Â
*Arizona State, under head coach Todd Graham, won handily at Utah this past Saturday, the first of ASU's games this season not decided by 10 points or less. Â The Sun Devils' offense is led by dynamic QB Manny Wilkins, who is in the national Top 20 in completion percentage and completions. Â His top target is WR N'Keal Harry, who is 12th in the nation in receptions. Â RBs Kalen Ballage and Demario Richard, who is ninth on the school's career rushing list with nearly 2,500 yards, man the ground attack (both have 3,000-plus career all-purpose yards and at least 25 total TDs in their careers). Â ASU's defense, which ranks high nationally in sacks, features LBs Christian Sam, who leads the Pac-12 in tackles, and DJ Calhoun. Â The Sun Devils are the least penalized team in the country.
