Jack Jaede & Tanner Smith Dig Through To Doubles Semifinals In Malibu

Trojans will fight the top seeds in tomorrow’s semis at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships.
MALIBU, CALIF. — The No. 6 seeded pair in the doubles draw out at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, USC's Jack Jaede and Tanner Smith pulled off a tiebreaker win in today's quarterfinals to advance to tomorrow's semifinals out in Malibu.
USC had two doubles teams in the quarterfinals today, along with two Trojans in the singles quarterfinals. When all was said and done, it was Jaede and Smith who were through to the next round. The No. 6 seeds went down to the wire to serve up an upset of the No. 4 seeded pair from UC Santa Barbara, beating the Gauchos in a nailbiter, 8-7 (8). That puts Jaede/Smith up against the top seeds from Arizona State tomorrow in the semifinals at 11 a.m. at Pepperdine's Ralphs Straus Tennis Center.
Also in the doubles quarterfinals today, No. 5 seeded juniors Logan Smith and Laurens Verboven were upended by a San Diego pair, 8-6, to end USC's hopes of a possible all-Trojan final. Meanwhile, in singles, Jaede and Logan Smith were also still in action with quarterfinal bouts on their dockets. Top-seeded Smith stumbled 6-4, 6-3 to ASU's Benjamin Hannestad — one half of the duo the Trojans will face in tomorrow's doubles' semis. No. 3 seeded Jaede was lined up against ASU's No. 11 seed, Michael Geerts. The Aussie was able to snag the first set, but the Sun Devil fought back and knocked Jaede out of the singles draw with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 decision.
