USC goalie McQuin Baron will serve the same role for Team USA as he heads to his first Olympic Games. The 6-foot-8 rising junior already has a wealth of experience under his belt, including starting at USC from day one as a freshman.
Despite his youth, he has played for the senior national team since 2013. Last year, he led Team USA to gold at the 2015 Pan American Games. And more recently, he made 29 saves in the 2016 FINA World League Super Final.
The Americans, ranked No. 6 in the world, have high hopes for Rio 2016 after finishing eighth at London 2012. The country has not won gold since 1904, when the sport was just a demonstration event.
"We're the only team in the world that's trained nonstop for eight months, and we've gotten better every month," said Tony Azevedo, the most experienced player on the team. "It's exciting to see. I think we're going to be a team that everyone's afraid of. I know they're already afraid of us. Be ready. In Rio, we're going to be one of the best teams in the world, and I'm really excited and proud to play with these guys."
