After an agonizing wait, McCullough picked up his golden ticket to Rio 2016. The USC alum finished third in the hammer throw at the U.S. Olympic Trials, but he did not meet the Olympic qualifying standard, so he had to sweat until the deadline to see if he squeezed into the field of 32.
Now, McCullough can breathe a sigh of relief, having fulfilled his dream to follow in his father's footsteps. Conor McCullough Sr. was a two-time Olympian in the hammer throw, competing for Ireland in 1984 and 1988.
McCullough, 25, is a two-time medalist at the World Junior Championships, including gold in 2010 and silver in 2008. He also won bronze at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games.
