March 04, 2016 | Track & Field
Eric Sloan was named the West Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year and Director of Track & Field Caryl Smith Gilbert was named the West Region Men's Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) today March 4.
The junior Sloan helped lead USC to the men's team title at the MSPF Indoor Championships in Seattle, from Feb. 26-27. At that meet, Sloan won both the triple jump and the long jump. He holds the collegiate lead by more than a foot with a best this indoor season of 55-10.50 (17.03m). He also has a best long jump of 25-9.25 (7.85m). Sloan will compete in both events at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 11-12 in Birmingham, Ala.
Smith Gilbert, in her third season at the helm of the USC program, guided the men's team to the MPSF title as they won five of the 17 events. She also guided the women's team to a third-place finish. It was just the second season the men's team competed in the MPSF conference and the women's program has won the team title in two of three seasons in the conference.
The NCAA Indoor Championships will air live on ESPN3, with a nationally taped-delayed showing on Sunday, March 13 at 4 p.m. PT on ESPN2.
