Former USC defensive tackle Gary Jeter, a 1976 All-American first teamer and 1974 national champion, died on Thursday (March 10) in Plainsboro, N.J. He was 61.

Jeter was a four-year (1973-76) starter for the Trojans, recording 234 career tackles at USC and winning all-conference first team honors his last three seasons. During his time, the Trojans played in three Rose Bowls (1974-75-77) and in the 1975 Liberty Bowl.
He was the fifth pick of the 1977 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. He would go on to play 13 NFL seasons with the Giants, Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots.
