No. 6 USC Wins Southwestern Jones Invitational By 20 Strokes
March 01, 2016 | Men's Golf
The No. 6 USC men's golf team turned in a dominating performance to win the Southwestern Jones Invitational on Tuesday (March 1) at North Ranch C.C. while senior Andrew Levitt fired a final-round 68 to catch and pass teammate Jonah Texeira and clinch his first career collegiate victory. The Trojans won their second tournament of the season at 26-under 838 (280-282-286), 20 better than host Pepperdine and 25 better than third-place San Diego State.
Levitt won at 8-under 208 (72-68-68), combined a 3-under front 9 with a 1-under back to secure his first win as a Trojan.
Levitt overtook sophomore Jonah Texeira who tied at 7-under 209 (69-67-73). Texeira led for most of the three rounds and was 3-under through 10, but hit his first rough match during the home stretch, bogeying three late holes. Texeira's tie for second was still a career-best finish as a Trojan and marked the fourth top 8 he's had this season.
"Winning always feels good and I'm happy for all the guys on the team," USC Coach Chris Zambri said. "But I'm especially happy for Andrew, a senior who won his first college tournament. We have an event next week so for us it's just back to the drawing board and figuring out how to get ourselves ready for that."
Sophomore Sean Crocker tied for fifth at 5-under 211 (69-68-74) while junior Rico Hoey tied for 10th at 1-under 215 (70-74-71). Hoey registered his fifth straight top 10 and the sixth this season while Crocker turned in his third top 10.
Freshman Ryan Slater, playing individually, tied for 13th at even 216 (70-73-73). Fellow freshman Justin Suh carded a final round 75.
The Trojans return to action March 7-9 at the Southern Highlands Intercollegiate at the Southern Highlands C.C. in Las Vegas.
