USC football head coach Clay Helton received his award as Los Angeles' Coach of the Year at the LA Sport Awards on Thursday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Produced annually by the L.A. Sports Council, the LA Sports Awards recognize the greatest moments and figures of the year in the Los Angeles area. Recent winners of the Coach of the Year award include Doc Rivers, John Savage and Darryl Sutter.
Helton became the Trojans' interim head coach on October 12 and was named the new head coach on November 30. He led the Trojans to the Pac-12 Championship game and secured USC's first win over UCLA in three years, finishing the season with a 5-4 record under his helm.
