The heart of the USC offense is power running and Hawaii native Vavae Malepeai is a suitable fit for the Trojans' style. The tailback from Mililani High ran for 1,952 yards on 234 carries (8.3 average) and 29 touchdowns in his senior campaign. Malepeai's senior year performance brought a lot of attention to the island, as he was named the Gatorade Hawaii Player of the Year and the USA Today All-Hawaii Offensive Player of the Year after setting state career records with his 4,556 rushing yards and 71 rushing TDs.
