Forty-five years ago, the Trojans started off 16-0 before suffering their first loss of the season to UCLA. This year, the No. 23 Trojans are 11-0, while the team across town is ranked No. 2 at 12-0 --- its best start since the 1970-71 season as well.
Back in 1971, UCLA handed USC its only two losses of the year and stopped the Trojans from reaching the postseason, since the Pac-8 only allowed one conference team to move on. L.A. Times reporter Ben Bolch told the story of the 1971 season and previewed this year's matchup (coming on Jan. 25) between two of the six currently undefeated NCAA squads.
