USC women's basketball nearly knocked off No. 5 Mississippi State at the Galen Center yesterday, but fell just short, losing 76-72.

In the championship game of the Women of Troy Classic, the undefeated Bulldogs (12-0) edged the Trojans (8-2) despite USC leading for more than 26 minutes of the game.
The Trojans built up a 7-point lead thanks to 24 points from Sadie Edwards, 15 points from Kristen Simon and 14 points from Minyon Moore. Asiah Jones also had a standout game, registering 8 blocks --- the most by a Trojan since Lisa Leslie's 8 in 1993 and the third-most in USC women's basketball history.

The Bulldogs took the lead with 2:20 to go on 2 free throws, which seemed to be the theme of the later part of the game. Mississippi State finished 23-of-29 from the charity stripe, while USC hit 14-of-18.
Despite the loss in the title game, USC's Simon was named to the Women of Troy Classic All-Tournament team. Next up for Simon and the Trojans is a trip to UC Irvine on Wednesday before Pac-12 play begins.
