Friend served 30 years in the U.S. Army Air Corps, during which he flew 142 missions before retiring in 1972. He was a pilot with the Tuskegee Airmen, the nation's first African American military pilot group.
For his service, Friend was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 2007, and has received a Bronze Star, a Distinguished Flying Cross, a Distinguished Service Cross and an Air Medal.
