The USC baseball season may be over, which means the end of a long four-year career for senior captain Garrett Stubbs, but the awards for the catcher keep on coming. Stubbs was named one of the three finalists for the Johnny Bench Award that goes to the nation's best collegiate catcher on Tuesday along with Matt Winn of the Virginia Military Institute and Kade Scivicque of LSU.Â
One of the biggest criteria of the award is the number of innings caught because in order to be nominated a player must be the starting catcher for 75 percent of the team's games. Stubbs caught 38 innings alone over the weekend while hitting .563 in the Trojans' four games, which earned him the honor of NCAA Lake Elsinore regional MVP. Stubbs was also named Pac-12 Defensive Player of Year after throwing out 20-of-41 baserunners this season, which ranks him fifth nationally.Â
All finalists will get to go to Wichita for the 18th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet where the winner will be announced on June 25.Â
