After starting the season with a confident 7-0 record, the USC men's volleyball team started to encounter some adversity, losing seven of its next 11 matches. However, coming off of a five-set comeback win over No. 9 Long Beach State on Friday, the Trojans feel their hard work is finally starting to pay off.
"We've been continually improving over the last two weeks," said head coach Bill Ferguson. "We took a couple steps back in the last month, but now we're starting to see the fruits of that moving forward. The big picture is starting to fall into place and that's working out pretty well for us."
No. 7 USC, led by Christopher Orenic with 19 kills and Larry Tuileta with 11 kills and 11 digs, battled back after dropping two of the first three sets to LBSU to win its fifth five-set match of 2015.
The Trojans return to the Galen Center this weekend for tough back-to-back MPSF matches versus No. 8 UC Santa Barbara (March 27 at 8 p.m. PT) and No. 12 UCLA (March 28 at 7 p.m. PT). In February, USC lost to both teams in one week, falling 3-0 to the Gauchos and 3-1 to the Bruins. With the strides the team feels its made in the last month, the Trojans are confident they can create different results against the two teams the second time around.
