Former USC Distance Runner Cherry Passes Away

LOS ANGELES - Dr. John Cherry, an outstanding USC miler and two-miler who was on the 1949 and 1950 NCAA Champion teams, passed away on Feb. 13 in San Diego, Calif.
Cherry also ran on USC relays and was a member of the Trojans's distance medley team which won the 1950 Fresno West Coast Relays.
Cherry graduated from the USC medical school and went on to become the chief of staff and chairman of the Department of Surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif.
He remained loyal to the USC track and field program, traveling to Olympics and several World Championships to root on the competing Trojans.
