The fight for first begins tonight as No. 2 USC men's volleyball hosts No. 7 BYU on Thursday for the first of two matches that will determine the top spot in the MPSF conference. The Trojans are coming off a week that included their first loss of the season but still boast an impressive 8-1 overall record with a 7-1 record in conference play. The Cougars also possess a 7-1 conference record, including a loss to UC Santa Barbara and a non-conference loss to Loyola-Chicago.
Leading the Trojans thus far is Christopher Orenic, who has 112 kills and 56 digs on the season, and Micah Christenson, with 71 digs and 37 blocks. Teammates Alex Slaught, Cristian Rivera, Brooks Varni and others have also contributed to USC's best start since 1991.
The last time these two teams met was in the 2014 MPSF tournament quarterfinals, in which the Cougars swept the Trojans in Provo, Utah. USC is hungry to wipe the slate clean and continue its strong start to the 2015 season.
The first match begins at 7 p.m. PT at Galen Center on Thursday and the second match will be played at 7 p.m. PT at Galen Center on Friday.
