The USC men's volleyball team is off to its best start in 24 years after a straight-set victory over Cal State Northridge on Friday. The Trojans are 7-0 for the first time since 1991 and look to extend their winning streak in a tough atmosphere against Hawaii this Wednesday and Friday.
The No. 2 ranked Trojans protected their undefeated record against Cal State Northridge on Friday thanks to a match-best 13 kills from junior Alex Slaught. Sophomore Chris Orenic added a match-best 8 digs and senior Micah Christenson finished with three aces as USC went on to win 25-16, 25-17, 25-17 over the Matadors.
Head coach Bill Ferguson credited the Trojans' hot start to the team's ability to improve their passing as well as offensive transitions; however, the most important area of improvement according to the head coach is the team chemistry. Veteran captain Micah Christenson is learning what some of this fresh talent can do in order for him to set them up to play at their highest potential.
Ferguson says the team motto is to just take things one day at a time and not look too far ahead, but USC will get a real test in these next two matches against Hawaii. The No. 6 ranked Rainbow Warriors play in front of the best home crowd in college volleyball and seem to average 3 points per set more at home than away, according to Ferguson.
